In 1969, Daventry Mixed Youth Club fielded an all-girl rugby team (ages 13–16), believed at the time to be the only girls’ team in England.
Special thanks to Robert Brown who highlighted this story to us. In the month where Northamptonshire is hosting International Women’s Rugby Teams from England, Japan, Italy, South Africa, Brazil, Samoa, Ireland, Spain and France, there’s no better time to reflect on the growth of our game.
A little over 55 years ago, Daventry girls were leading that charge. We’d love to talk to any of these girls (ladies) now, so if you recognise any of them, please do get in contact. Maybe you know Roland Jordan, the Head Coach? They will all be in their 70’s now, so hope the internet can help us!
We are still championing Women’s Rugby, so if you’re a bit younger than 70 and fancy playing for us, get in touch. There’s no better time to playing the game.
